Promise Keeper

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,

for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10: 23

One day during recess duty, I overheard two little girls squabbling back and forth, and finally mending their differences yelling, “Pinky swear!” and reciting together, “Cross your heart, hope to die, never tell a dirty lie.” Moments later, I watched them, carefree and holding hands, as they skipped around the schoolyard together.

Oh, to have a childlike faith! Somehow, these two munchkins got it. As young as they were, they were allowing God to speak grace over their life. As an adult, my old, sinful nature can bog me down. When I choose to repent, and confront my emotions, I become ready to process the events and seek forgiveness for my wrong doing. Whether or not the other party is willing to even speak to me, I realize I need to move on. Oftentimes, I need to press the delete button to learn and grow from past mistakes. For me, that’s the hardest part. I need to release the power of the Holy Spirit and remember that there are some things that take time.

I strive to fast forward to envision a new life in Christ. The sad reality is, human beings break promises. They sometimes unknowingly disappoint us, cut us out of their plans, or worse yet, seek revenge. We become angry and full of past regrets. God reminds us that He and He alone is a Promise Keeper.

When I recognize my shortcomings, regroup, refuel, and refresh in God’s Truths, He responds with forgiveness.

The apostle, John writes, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1: 9).

Likewise, in the book of Psalms, we read: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation” (Psalm 91: 14-16).

This Truth also proclaims: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91: 1-2).

With God’s faithfulness, I have been set free. God is a mountain-mover and my all-time provider. As He dries my tears I no longer fear dragons under the bed or monsters in the closet. Pinky swears grow dimmer and dimmer. I am born again. With God I can move past pain and anguish. As I give testimony, His quiet Spirit becomes my inner calm. I am blanketed with peace. I trust that God will help mend fences and protect me from all evil, granting me the gift of everlasting life.

In Gratitude, let’s pray.

O’ Lord,

You are my Promise Keeper. Teach me to be a faithful follower; to be the first to reach out even when it’s hard to do. May those I have hurt know how sorry I am.

Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me (Psalm 119: 133).

Help me to leave a legacy of love and forgiveness. As I seek your Divine Wisdom, I am especially grateful for that sense of inner peace that only trusting in Your Promises can bring. Thank you for your gift of patience as you walk beside me, lifting me when I fall, always repositioning me in the right direction.

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground (Psalm 143:10).

Amen.

Thank you for your loving presence, my friend.

May the Light of Jesus shine brighter and brighter through you with each passing day!

Until next time…

May the Spirit of God lead you

The Word of God sustain you,

and the promises of God grant you the gift of everlasting peace.

With joy and summer blessings.
