The Joy of Journaling

Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.

Jeremiah 30: 2 (NIV)

Is there something you do regularly that provides a sense of calm and renewed energy? Maybe, like me, it could be having regular conversations with someone you care about, taking your daily walk, wrapping your day in prayer, or curling up with a good book. Whatever it is, having gifted yourself with moments to nourish your soul is beneficial not only to you but also to others.

I have also discovered the joy of journaling. These days, writing things down by hand might seem old-fashioned. With smartphones and laptops at our fingertips, why bother with pen and paper? Surprisingly, this simple act offers benefits that technology often can’t match. I have learned that writing by hand can boost memory, creativity, and overall well-being.

Studies show that writing longhand engages different parts of the brain than typing. This deeper processing helps us understand and remember information better. Whether taking notes, jotting down a grocery list, or memorizing Bible verses, scripting by hand can help you retain and recall information effectively.

One benefit is that writing scripture by hand sparks creativity and encourages self-reflection. After reading the Word, the slower pace allows your mind to wander and explore new ideas. Identifying and copying scripture passages that speak to and connect with your life experiences into your journal, helps to unlock your potential and allow you to gain deeper insights about yourself as you apply God’s Truth to your life.

Rediscovering the power of prayer through journaling can make a profound impact. I started journaling years ago by jotting down inspirational quotes, verses, and other people’s thoughts on what scripture meant. Today, as a lifelong learner, I continue to take notes and do additional research on my own. However, I have found that writing down my own prayers is a powerful tool for finding solace, expressing gratitude, and seeking guidance.

When combined with journaling, prayer can become even more meaningful. Writing down your prayers and scripture that relate to your personal experiences on any given day helps you listen to the Holy Spirit, seek God’s wisdom, articulate your desires, and reflect on your blessings. It’s like having a heart-to-heart conversation with your soul.

Over time, writing about personal experiences while contemplating scripture brings clarity and strengthens resolve, allowing for a more intentional response to what truly matters.

So my friend, I invite you to give it a try! Choose your pen, write from your heart, and let your words fill the page.

As you write, allow God’s promises to renew and recharge your soul. It is my prayer, that like David, “The words of your mouth and the meditation of your heart will be pleasing to the Lord, your Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19: 14).

Thank you, my dear friend, for being a special part of this community.

Until next time…

May the Spirit of God lead you,

the Word of God sustain you, and

may the promises of God grant you the gift of everlasting peace.

Happy journaling!

Wishing you solace and peace.
