My health may fail, and my spirit grow weak, but God

remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.

Psalm 73: 26 NLT

As I was reading Psalm 73 this week I was reminded how important it is to look and listen with my heart.

Penned by Asaph, a prominent Levite, prophet, chief musician in the sanctuary, and psalmist in the time of King David, his timeless words assured me of God’s abiding presence no matter what life brings.

The psalmist starts off lamenting–stating his feelings of envy, and confusion brought on by living in a corrupt sinful world. He shared his personal disappointment, and admitted, “When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny” (Psalm 73: 16-17).

Asaph’s position of the world shifted when he viewed life from God’s perspective. Knowing one day justice will be done, and that the eternal wealth he would receive was much greater than anything he could achieve or accumulate here on this earth, he humbled himself and was reminded who he was and who he was called to be.

It was in God’s presence that Asaph understood the magnitude of his blessings and spoke to the Father knowing he was God’s beloved, God would be his comfort, and his Word would guide him for all eternity (verses 23-25).

Loved. Held. Safe. Until the moment we move from this life into the next, the God of the Universe is with us.

Through physical and spiritual weakness, God calls his children to surrender and trust him in all things.

In each passage of life God’s power restores us.

You and I are invited to lean on God’s strength and not our own.

“My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever” (Psalm 73: 26).

Admitting our powerlessness and surrendering to God’s power, He becomes our strength and our song.

Let’s pray.

Loving God,

Thank you for the gift of your promises. May the things of this world grow dim, and may your Holy Spirit’s power fill me with your light and grace in your presence. My body and heart may fail, but God you are the unfailing source of my strength. I praise you and thank you, for your counsel, clarity, and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Thank you, sweet friend, for being here.

Until next time…

May the Spirit of God lead you,

the Word of God sustain you, and

the Promises of God grant you the gift of everlasting peace.

Have a blessed and beautiful day!

Sending love and blessings.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. When you are at the end of your rope how will you let go and trust God?

  2. Name the circumstances in your life that are out of your control. Write a prayer admitting to God your powerlessness, and ask him to help you rely on his strength and not your own.
